Adult Neurogenic Communication Disorders

At the UTHSC, our emphasis is upon maximizing听the functional communication skills of adults with acquired speech, language, and cognitive-communication disorders resulting from stroke, brain injury, or neurological disease.听Our goal is to assist each patient听in achieving and maintaining those skills that will enable him/her听to听function听as independently as听possible in home, work, and social environments.

Evaluation

Our evaluation protocols consist of a variety of tools designed听to thoroughly assess听the patient鈥檚 particular strengths and weaknesses in functional communication.听 These tools include both patient and family interviews as well as standardized tests for communication and cognition.听

Our treatment programs听are designed听according to the particular needs and skills of the听patient.听 These programs are evidence-based and emphasize听functional activities听tailored to the specific needs of each individual.听 Some of the areas typically addressed include:听

  • Language Comprehension and Expression听
  • Cognitive Skills (attention, memory, executive functions, word retrieval, processing speed, mental flexibility, visuospatial abilities)听
  • Motor Speech (respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance,听speech intelligibility, motor planning)听听

In addition to our evaluation and treatment, we offer patient and family counseling and education, as well as a mechanism for peer interaction and support, and we are available for consultations and in-service programs.听
